Using Defence Values as a baseline, Australian Defence Force – Philosophical – 0 Military Ethics defines what it means to be ethical in a military context. Military ethics are drawn from general ethical principles combined with a long tradition of examining the ethics of war and ethics in war. It applies to individual ethical decision-making, as well as the ethics of the ADF as an institution. They are applicable not only during the conduct of operations but throughout our everyday lives—at home, at work, on exercise or on deployment. Understanding what ethics is, and behaving ethically in all situations, is an inherent requirement of service in the ADF and an expectation of Australian society
