About AMS-TEC

The Australian Maritime Systems Technology and Evaluation Centre (AMS-TEC) is operated by the University of Tasmania (UTAS) at the National Centre for Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics (NCMEH) in Launceston, Tasmania.

AMS-TEC provides a comprehensive set of capabilities for testing, evaluating and certifying maritime autonomous systems. The centre is open to industry, government and academic users seeking access to world-class maritime test infrastructure in a controlled environment.

AMS-TEC covers nine defined areas of application for maritime autonomous systems, providing structured test scenarios for each.

Digital Twin Environment

High-fidelity digital models of the test environment and vessel systems, enabling pre-test simulation and post-test analysis.

Test Tanks

Three hydrodynamic test tanks at the NCMEH facility providing controlled water environments for sensor and propulsion testing.

Sensor Characterisation

Laboratory facilities for characterising and calibrating acoustic, optical and electromagnetic sensors in maritime conditions.

Mission Planning

Mission simulation and planning tools integrated with the digital twin environment to reduce physical test time and cost.

Data Management

Secure data management and analysis infrastructure for capturing, storing and processing test data in compliance with Defence data requirements.

Support Facilities

AMS-TEC provides access to the broader NCMEH facility, including vessel berths and workshop space, engineering and technical support staff, accommodation referrals, and secure data management infrastructure.
