Swarming is a key emerging technology for robotics, autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence (RAS-AI). This primer discusses current swarming technology. It aims to increase awareness and understanding, from both a commercial and defence perspective, of swarming and its potential associated issues. This primer explores several case studies to show the current state of swarming technology. Interestingly, these case studies demonstrate that swarming is typically not precluded by regulation. However, the process for obtaining approvals to operate is not well tested and is therefore time consuming and difficult to achieve. There are also several other technological and operational limitations to the more widespread adoption of swarm technology.
